Introduction to Heat Pumps

Heat pumps are machines or devices that move heat from one location (the 'source') to another location (the 'sink' or 'heat sink') using mechanical work. Most heat pump technology moves heat from a low temperature heat source to a higher temperature heat sink. Common examples are food refrigerators and freezers, air conditioners, and reversible-cycle heat pumps for providing thermal comfort.

Most homeowners who have heat pumps use them to heat and cool their homes. But heat pumps also can be used to heat water—either as stand-alone water heating system, or as combination water heating and space conditioning system.
